New York Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden is given the nickname as the “Most Famous Arena in the World”.  The area can occupy 20,000 audiences. It is located further up from the Pennsylvania Station. The Pennsylvania Station is located on the 7th Avenue. It occupies the entire block between the 31st and 33rd Streets. It was established in 1968. It is the fourth garden to be built in Madison Square. It is home arena to the New York Knicks and New York Liberty basketball teams. The Madison Square Garden is also home to the New York Rangers hockey team. Every year, more than six hundred events are being hosted on Madison Square Garden. The events hosted at Madison Square Garden include various types of concerts, shows, and meetings.  The Ringling Bros Barnum Bailey Circus visit the Madison Square Garden once per year.


Madison Square Garden is the fourth largest arena in the world. The first arena is not equipped with a roof cover. It was constructed in 1879 by P.T. Barnum. P.T. Barnum used to work as a showman.

The second Madison Square Garden was established in 1890. The second Madison Square Garden has a Moorish castle style. It offers up to eight thousand seats for the audience. The floor space can accommodate about a few hundreds audiences. It was demolished and replaced by the third Madison Square Garden. The third Madison Square Garden was built in 1925 on a location consists of numerous trolley barns. The third Madison Square Garden was located between 8th Avenue and 50th Street. During that time, it is used to host boxing show. Jack Dempsey used to compete in this arena.

Other Venues

Besides the main arena, Madison Square Garden offers other facilities. The Theater at Madison Square Garden can accommodate at least two thousand to five thousand audiences. The Theater at Madison Square Garden hosts all kinds of events including concerts, musical show and etc. Sometimes, the stockholders will have meeting at the Madison Square Garden.  The whole building complex covers an area of thirty six thousand square foot. The New York City Cat Show hosts its show at the Madison Square Garden each year.


On the 19th May 1962, President John F. Kennedy celebrated his 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden. Marilyn Monroe dedicated a birthday song called “Happy Birthday Mr. President” during President Kennedy’s birthday party. Billy Joel broke the record sale when performing his concert at the Madison Square Garden in 2006. Many television program and movies feature Madison Square Garden. Some of the movies that feature Madison Square Garden include Electric Horseman, and Highlander. In the movie Godzilla, there is a clip that shows Madison Square Garden. The Concert for New York City was held at the Madison Square Garden after the 911 incident took place. The charity concert called “From the Big Apple to the Big Easy Concert” was organized at the Madison Square Garden.

Visiting Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden can be accessible from all areas in the Greater New York City region. It is located above the Pennsylvania Station. Every day, taxis will queue up at the 7th Avenue. The arena is equipped with 25 television screens, and high definition television. The Garden Club is the premium restaurant at the Madison Square Garden. You can find the Garden Club restaurant at the Club level. There are other food stalls near the Madison Square Garden such as Starbuck, and Blimpies Subs. In addition, it is equipped with restrooms.

Parents can change the diapers of their babies at the baby changing station. If you didn’t bring cash, you can withdraw it from the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) located at the Madison Square Garden. The Madison Square Garden team shop offers souvenir items for visitors. Wheelchairs can be provided for handicapped people at a fee.

There are three major airports near to Madison Square Garden including LaGuardia International, Newark Liberty International, and John F. Kennedy International. LaGuardia is located about nine miles from Madison Square Garden. John F. Kennedy International is located about sixteen miles from the Madison Square Garden. Newark Liberty International is located about seventeen miles from the Madison Square Garden.

Animals are not allowed inside the boundary of Madison Square Garden. However, blind people can bring along their guide dogs. The requirements of the service animals are defined by the ADA (American with Disabilities Act).

Madison Square Garden offers hearing impaired facilities such as Assistive Listening Devices (ALD). Deaf and dumb visitors can visit the Arena and the Theater during an event at the Madison Square Garden. The Assistive Listening Devices installed in the arena rely on the FM system. For the arena, you can arrange for an ALD outside of Gate 65. For the theater, you can arrange for the ALD facility through Event Manager’s office. If you want to learn about the disability services, you can call (212) 465-6034. The Disabled Services department is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The ATM is available at the Box Office lobby. The Box Office lobby is located near Window #2. On the Third Floor Club, there are 2 ATMs.

According to the policy of Madison Square Center, no backstage pass will be distributed for the events. If you bring backpacks, it will be checked by the security guard before it can rest on your set. Large bags are not allowed. Visitors can bring binoculars to watch the concert from far. Outside food and beverages cannot be brought to Madison Square garden. The box office is open at 9 a.m. on weekdays. During Saturday, the box office is open at 10 a.m. During Sunday, the box office is open at 12 p.m.

Bus and limousine drop off services are situated on the Seventh Avenue on the 31st Street. If you want to learn about more information, you should contact the New York City Department of Transportation at 212-639-9675.

Tour guide is available at Madison Square Garden. The tour guide includes tours in the locker room and theater. The charge for the guide tour is $17 for adult and $12 for kids under twelve years of age. Children above 12 years old are counted as adult.  The tour guide offers tour for visitors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
