New York American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is situated in the west side of the New York City. It is situated at the 79th Street in Central Park West. It was originally built in 1869. It offers a large range of historical collections. It has a number of research facilities.

The American Museum of Natural History was originally located at the old arsenal building in Central Park. When the facilities of the museum had to be expanded, it was moved to the present location to accommodate them in the 1874.

Scientists from around the world often visit the American Museum of Natural History. The museum attracted world famous scientists because it has a huge exhibition. The scientists visit the museum to perform their research. Some of the famous people who visited the museum include Margaret Mead, Franz Boas, and Roy Chapman Andrews. Roy Chapman Andrews is the main inspiration of the movie character called Indiana Jones. Young and old alike will enjoy browsing the American museum of natural history. With a wide array of exhibitions, there is surely something for everyone to see.

The exhibitions help young children to learn about the animal and plants. Children will be able to learn faster by exploring the items displayed in the museum.

In the Fossil Halls, you will find a large collection of vertebrate fossils. There are approximately 1,000,000 vertebrate fossils. There are two dinosaur halls in the Fossil Halls. The most important display in the Fossil Halls is the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegosaurus. Most of the fossils displayed in the Fossil Halls are not accessible by the public. The fossils are kept in different storage areas in the Museum Complex. The ten story Childs Frick Building is a storage facility for the fossils. The Childs Frick Building is located in the inner courtyard. To protect the large fossil bones, the designers had added steel to guard the building framework. The building houses the largest collection of fossils that are obtained from the ancient animals and dinosaurs.  The fossils occupy the lower floors of the Frick Building. The top three floors is consist of the laboratories. The offices of the staffs are also located on the top three floors.

Rose Center for Earth and Space

Recently, the museum added a new section called Rose Center. The Rose Center reaches a height of 120 foot. The area of the rose center is 333,500 square foot. The glass curtain wall is one of the modern features in the museum. At the Rose Center, you can find the Hayden Planetarium. There is a range of space and universe items exhibited in the Hayden Planetarium. The Hall of Universe has a large range of star and galaxy exhibits.

The Heilbrun Cosmic Pathway is the most significant feature of the Rose Center. The Heilbrun Cosmic Pathway is opened on the 19th February 2000. The Heyden Planetarium was established by an American philanthropist called Charles Hayden in 1935. Later, it becomes connected to the Rose Center for Earth and Space. The original hayden planetarium is demolished in 2000 to make way for the new planetarium. The new hayden planetarium costs $210 million to build. The architecture of the hayden planetarium is designed by James Stewart Polshek. It has six storey. The high glass cube of the building enclosed an area of 87 foot sphere.

Tom Hanks is the first to give a speech at the planetarium show. The planetaurium show is a show organized for the opening of the Rose Center for Earth & Space. Other actors that are featured in the rose center include Whoopi Goldberg, and Maya Angelou.

The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life

The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life has a number of ocean fossils such as dolphins, porpoises, and squid. The largest fossil in the Milstein Hall of Ocean life is the 94 foot blue whale.

The Cultural halls

The Cultural Halls features many works of Margaret Mead and Frank Bois. In the Cultural Halls, you will find a wide range of display that gives insight to different cultures around the world including South America, Africa, Asia and South Pacific.

Bird and Mammals Halls

The Bird and Mammals Halls displays all kinds of animals and birds in a three dimensional life like scene. You will find bird exhibits from the New York, North America and other parts of the world.

Imax Theatre

The IMAX Theatre offers movie presentations for the tourists. You will find all sorts of natural geographic movies. The most recent film included in the IMAX Theatre is Galapagos. The Galapagos is a discovery show about the animals that live on the Galapagos Island. The film also explores the famous research conducted by Charles Darwin.

Visiting the AMNH

The American Museum of Natural History is open on every weekday and weekend. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day. The museum is open for visitation from 10 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. On the first Friday of each month, the museum business hours is extended to 8 p.m.  There are many ways to reach the entrance of the American museum of natural history. It is accessible via highways and subway.

There are a number of restaurants in the museum. The food court us located on the lower level. The food court serves a large range of dishes such as sandwich, salads, soft drinks and coffee. There is a popular café in the museum called café on 4. Café on 4 offers delicious sandwiches and cheese gourmet for customers. At the Starlight Café, you will find all sorts of light snacks. Some of the light snacks for sale at the Starlight Café include hot dogs and chicken nuggets.

Visitors can purchase souvenirs from the museum’s store. The museum’s store offers a large range of items including dinosaur board games, umbrellas, and giant blue wheels. The gifts displayed in the museum store are unique and interesting.

The American Museum of Natural is suitable for young and old visitors. Because it has a large volume of displays, everyone will surely find something in their visit.
