New York Statue of Liberty


The Statue of Liberty is the most visited tourist attraction in New York. It is also the most well known place in the world. Your trip wouldn’t be complete if you did not pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty in New York. The Statue of Liberty is dubbed with the nickname “Liberty Enlightening the World”. The whole statue is made of bronze. The architect of the Statue of Liberty is Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886. It is the symbol of the United States. It is also the first thing that that thousands of immigrants witness when their ship reach New York. The Statue of Liberty is actually a gift from France. France suggested the building of the statue as a friendship gift to the United States. It also serves as a commemoration for the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of American Independence. Many people claimed that the signing of the Declaration of American Independence is largely influenced by the French Revolution. The statue signifies friendship between the United States and France. The French built and assemble the statue. The Americans were only responsible for building the platforms of the statue. Due to insufficient funds, the project was postponed to a later date. The construction of the Statue of Liberty was not finished until 1886.

During 1870, The first terracotta model of the Statue of Liberty was developed. The first terracotta model is being displayed at the Musee Des beaux-arts de Lyon. The first smaller version of bronze replica was presented as a gift to Paris on the 13th May 1885. The gift is actually given by the American who are living in Paris at that time. In 1889, the statue was moved to the lle des Crygnes from Place des Etats-Unis.

The construction of the statue costs $2.25 millions francs. The building fund was contributed by the public. Many types of entertainments were conducted to raise the building funds for the Statue of Liberty. Charles Gounod performed the La liberté éclairant le monde (Liberty enlightening the world) in France to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty. In the United States, the building funds are raised through auctions, art exhibitions and etc.

Lady Liberty

Lady Liberty stands on top of the huge platform. The platform has a star shaped. Lady Liberty is one of the most interesting attractions of all time. The statue has a height of 151 feet. Her right hand is holding a torch light. Her left hand is carrying a table that inscribed the word MDCCLXXVI (1776). The chains on one of the foot are broken. The broken chain signifies the values of American which is freedom and independence. Lady Liberty is wearing a crown with seven points. Each point signifies the continent in the world. The seven points of the crown signifies the seven continents in the world. The platform of the Statue of Liberty has a plaque carved with the words of the poem titled “New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus.

Restoration

The Statute of Liberty underwent repair and maintenance during the mid 1900s. The restoration project is directed by Lee Lacocca. The cost for the restoration project is $62,000,000. To restore the statue, Lee closed it down for two years. During the two years, the workers scrap out the paint from the statue. There are seven layers of paint on the statue. The 1350 iron spines are replaced with stainless steel rods. The torch has been worn down after enduring the weather. The torch is being replaced with a replica. The Statue of Liberty was fully restored and dedicated on the 4th July 1996. The dedication day marks the 100th year anniversary of the original dedication.

Facts

The materials of the Statue of Liberty were built in France. It was disabled in France before shipping to the United States. The materials of the Statue of Liberty arrive in 217 crates. There are all together 350 pieces of materials. The Statue of Liberty is an important culture in America. The Statue of Liberty is featured in many movies. Some of the movies that feature the Statue of Liberty are Planet of the Apes and Ghostbusters. In the movie the Day after Tomorrow, the statue is shown as being encased in a case made from ice.

In Paris, a statue that resembles the Statue of Liberty is found on the island in Seine River. The statue is designed by the same architect called Bartholdi. The statue seems to be looking towards the United States in the west. Many people claim that the model of the statue of liberty is Isabella Eugenie Boyer. Isabelle Eugenie Boyer is a friend to Barthold. She is also friend to the widow of Isaac Singer. The engineer for the Statue of Liberty is Gustave Eiffel. Gustave Eiffel designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Admission to the Statue of Liberty is free of charge. Since the statue is located on the island, you must take a ferry to reach the place. The ferry rides are available at the Battery Park. You can find the ferry in Manhattan. You can also take ferry ride from the Liberty Park in New Jersey. The ferry fare includes the fee charges for the ride to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Since 11th September, the Statue of Liberty is no longer opened to visitors. However, visitors can still travel to the island and platform. The platform is a museum that exhibits a collection of artifacts related to the history of the statue of liberty. You can see the interior of the statue from the glass view window. At the museum, you will see the original arm of the Statue of Liberty. The original arm was replaced with a new arm during the restoration project that took place between 1984 – 1986.

The island has a large green field where parents can have picnic with their kids.  The Statue of Liberty in New York is a must see for every tourist.

The Statue of Liberty is situated in the New York harbor. It is open during daily operational hours from 9:30am – 5:00pm. The island is closed to the public on Christmas.
