New York Wall Street & Stock Exchange


Wall Street is located on the lower region in Midtown Manhattan, New York. It is the office of the New York Stock Exchange. Wall Street used to be the headquarter for the financial institutions and brokerage offices in the United States. Many years later, the brokerage houses relocated to their own office buildings in different states such as New Jersey and Connecticut. However, Wall Street is still used as a term to refer to the financial markets in United States.

History

The name Wall Street was derived from the wall that serves as boundary for the Dutch settlement in Manhattan in the 1600s. Many financial institutions was built on the same street with the New York Stock Exchange. As time passed by, the financial institutions flourish. During the peak period, the banks and brokerage houses are located in this district. The peak period of Wall Street lasted from the 1800s – 1900s.  During this period, the district is dubbed the nickname “House of Morgan” by the local residents. The local residents call it “House of Morgan” because the largest bank belonged to JP Morgan.

On the 11th September 2001, many companies moved away from the financial district to avoid possibility of terrorism. Since the attack, the banks and financial institutions are distributed across different places in the city.

New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange is ranks as the world’s largest stock exchange market. It has a capitalization of $20 trillion dollars. The suggestion of New York Stock Exchange came around 1792. In 1792, twenty four brokers and bankers assembled to sign the Buttonwood Agreement. The Buttonwood Agreement is named after the buttonwood tree located at the border of the Wall Street. The agreement defines the buy and sells system of the stock exchange company. The stock exchange company eventually becomes the New York Stock Exchange. The New York Stock Exchange operates the similar system as did a century ago. The system of the New York Stock Exchange is different than other modern NASDAQ marketplace. In the New York Stock Exchange system, buyers will make an offer to the seller. The buyer and seller will negotiate on a price until they comes into agreement at the trade center.

The NYSE planned to make a deal to take over Archipelago. The plan was announced on 21st April 2005. The NYSE wanted to acquire the Archipelago because they wanted to make their company a public trading company. The governing board at New York Stock Exchange has cast its votes against its rival who are fighting to acquire the Archipelago as well. On 8th March 2006, the NYSE had changed its name to NYSE Group. After one year, the NYSE Group joined with Euronext. Euronext is short form for European combined stock market. Hence, the New York Stock Exchange company is now known as NYSE Euronext. NYSE Euronext is the first transatlantic stock exchange market in the world. Marsh Carter is the CEO of New York Stock Exchange. Before Marsh Carter became CEO, John S. Reed is the CEO of New York Stock Exchange. The previous CEOs of the New York Stock Exchange include Duncan Niederauer and John Thain.

Visiting Wall Street and the NYSE

Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange is a nice district to explore. You can walk around the district to find out the facilities available there. You can access the Wall Street from many areas in the town. The cheapest way to travel to the district is through bus and subway train. If you want a faster trip, you can take a taxi. Tourists will be able to explore the exterior design of the New York Stock Exchange. Visitors are not permitted to enter the New York Stock Exchange trade ground. The rule was decreed due to the terrorism attack on the 11th September 2011.

The Federal Hall National Memorial is located in the financial district. The Federal Hall National Memorial is home to the first United States capital. It is also the place where President George Washington carried out the inauguration ceremony. If you keep walking along the Wall Street, you will reach the East River. The South Street Seaport is located at the East River. The South Street Seaport is a great shopping venue. There are several restaurants at the South Street Seaport. The South Street Seaport is frequently visited by the local and international tourists. The Fulton fish market was located on the South Street Seaport many times ago. The Manhattan fishermen went and returned from their fishing trip to the South Street Seaport daily during the 19th century. At the South Street Seaport, visitors will be given the opportunity to see a group of sailing ships that is used a century ago.

The Battery Park is located near the corner of the Wall Street & New York Stock Exchange district. The 32 acre waterfront is located in the Battery Park. From the Battery Park, you can observe the Ellis Island. The Battery Park faces the Statue of Liberty.

Wall Street and the New York financial district is a must see for every New York tourists. By visiting the district, you will learn about the American history. Without visiting the Wall Street district, your trip wouldn’t be completed.

The stock trading at the New York Stock Exchange are conducted in front of the public. The most advance communication technology is used at the new York Stock Exchange. The investors are only allowed to trade during the daytime. Most of the traders at the New York Stock Exchange are professionals. Since the trading is conducted in front of the public, the investors would know what is being taken place.

The New York Stock Exchange is being visited by more than seven hundred thousands people per year. it is ranks as the top ten destination in New York City.  The guided tour allows the tourists to learn more about the financial world. Currently, the NYSE is closed to the tourists. The NYSE Park has been closed down since 11th September 2001 due to security concerns.
