New York Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum


The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is situated in the 5th Avenue at 89th Street. Guggenheim Foundation operates six art museums including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Solomon built the museums to keep a private collection of abstract paintings. The museum has always been a landmark and architectural icon in New York City.

The Building

Solomon was faced with many obstacles when he was finding a location to house the museum. He sought the help of his friend, Baroness Hilla Rebay. Baroness Hilla in turn asked Frank Lloyd Wright to draft a design for the museum. If you observe the museum, you will find that has an inverted ziggurat structure. Inside the museum, there is a long ramp that connects top and bottom of the museum. The roof of the museum was constructed in such a way to allow the light to shine in easily.

The construction of the building came to a completion in 1959. When the building was finished, many people commented that its architecture is too modern for the traditional street. One person stood up to say that the building features too many arts. As a result, an art that hung on the wall is being removed. Solomon R. Guggenheim and Frank Lloyd Wright did not see the finished structure of the building. However, it continues to be one of the most unique architectural designs of all times.

Fran Lloyd originally wanted the museum to have a ten story tower. He intended for the ten story  tower to be at the back of the rotunda. The ten story tower was meant to be used for housing galleries and storage. However, Lloyd was not able to come up with the building fund.  After Lloyd had passed away, Gwathmey Siegel & Associates decided to fulfill the architectural plan. They built the tower with eight storey annex. The annex is the foundation of the smaller annex of the museum. The smaller annex is designed by the son in law of Frank Lloyd, William Wesley Peters.

In 1990, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was close down because renovation jobs are underway. Gwathmey Siegel & Associates was carrying out a large interior renovation for the building. After the restoration was finished, the building was open to the public. The renovation jobs include converting storage place into galleries in the museum. The restoration project took two years to complete. It was reopened in 1992. The project made the Gwathmey Siegel & Associates became one of the most popular architectural companies in the world. The new gallery space covers an area of 4750 square meters. The new office space covers an area of 130 square meters. The museum restaurant was restored and equipped with better facility.

The restoration project undertaken by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates helps to attract more visitors to the museum. When the museum was reopened in 1992, many visitors are impressed with the design of the building. The spiral design is the highlight architectural design by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates.

The Collection

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum offers a large variety of masterpiece. The oldest masterpiece dates back to the early 19th century. Most of the artworks of the 19th century artists are being featured in the museum. In this museum, you will find artworks from the great impressionists Cezanne and Pissaro. Artworks of Degas can also be found in the museum. Post Impressionist artworks by Van Gog and Gauguin are available at the Guggenheim Museum. Contemporary artwork collection is also found the museum. Contemporary artworks in the museum are contributed by Pollock, and Rothko. You can find paintings from the famous contemporary artists called Roauschenberg at the museum. The artwork presented in the museum is professional and unique. Tourists of the take photo of the paintings by Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky. Wassily Kandinsky is also known as Mr. Guggenheim. Mr. Guggenheim used to be a fan of the artworks by Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum features a number of changing exhibits. The changing exhibits help to draw visitors to the museum. In the changing exhibition, you will find private collection. Recent changing exhibitions include Abstract Impulse and Watercolors by Kandinsky. You can contribute your painting to the changing exhibition. The Guggenheim Museum can be reached from many parts of New York City. Several buses offers routes to the museum. The subway train travel to the Guggenheim Museum. Outside the museum, there are many taxis. The museum is open during the weekdays and weekends. It is shut down on Thursday. The museum is also closed on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. The opening hours of the museum are from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. During Saturday, the museum is open until 7:45 p.m.

The admission fee for adult is $18. People aged above 65 years old are qualified to get a discount.  Both students and seniors are charged $15. You have to provide a valid ID to prove your identity when buying the ticket. Children under 12 years old can enter the museum for free of charge. Members of the Guggenheim Museum are qualified for free admission. The admissions for dudio tours that are organized at the Guggenheim Museum are included in the admission ticket. Handicapped people can access the whole building of the museum conveniently.

The museum offers several food outlets and cafes. The cafes and food outlets are situated on the ground floor. The gift shop allows the visitor purchase souvenirs for their friends and families. Some of the souvenirs for sale at the gift shop include jewelry, prints, posters and note cards.
