New York Public Library


New York Public Library is originally built in 1886. It is one of the largest libraries in the United States. In the New York Public Library, you will find four research libraries. The library manages and controls eighty other libraries in the neighborhood. It has a total of 2,000,000 registered members. The most prominent building in the New York Public Library is the Main Research Library. The Main Research Library is located on the Fifth Avenue. The Main Research Library offers a large reading room. Two carved lions can be seen standing on the entrance.

History

New York Public Library is a combination of the Astor Library and Lenox Library. The Astor Library is financed by John Jacob Astor. The Lenox Library is a much smaller library located in the Frick Museum. Samuel J. Tilden offers a grant of $2.4 million to fund the construction of the New York Public Library. Andrew Carnegie donated $5.2 million to fund the building of the neighborhood libraries in 1901. The main research library was officially open for public visits in 1911.

The Main Research Library is located at the 5th avenue and 40th Street. It was first built in 1911. The architectural firm responsible for designing the Main Research Library is Carrere and Hastings. The research library offers more than seventy five miles of open shelves. Room 315 is the leading reading room in the main research library. The reading room has a length of 78 feet and a width of 297 feet. The ceiling of the library reaches up to 52 foot. Many university students visit the reading room to perform their research. In the Great Depression, New Yorkers who are unemployed come to the library to expand their knowledge in different professional fields. The materials in the reading room can offer college level education to the public.

The two lion statues are located in front of the entrance to the main research library. The main research library can be spotted by the huge library logo. The lion statues are made of pink Tennessee marble. The architect of the lion statues is Edward Clark Potter. The lion statues are the symbols of the library. The lions are bestowed with many nicknames by the local residents. The two lion statues are called Astor and Lennox respectively. The nicknames Astor and Lennox are derived from the founders of the library. In the Great Depression period, Mayor La Guardia called the two lion statues as Patience and Fortitude. Nowadays, the two lion statues are known as Uptown and Downtown.

The Main Research Library in the New York Library was featured in several books and television shows. Some of the movies that feature the main research library include Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the Wiz and Spiderman. The Main Research Library made its appearance in the movie titled Duplicate Keys by Jane Smiley. The television series called Seinfeld also show the Main Research Library.

The telephone reference system is being managed by 10 researchers. The ten researchers hold various degrees including child psychology and English literature. The researchers will not call back the person who asked the question.

The access card allows non residents to access the research materials in the library. Tourists who applied for an access card cannot have access to the circulating materials in the library.

Before you are allowed to borrow books, you must present the library card at the New York Public Library. The library card allows you to download eNYPL content, perform research at the Library database and borrow reference materials.
