New York National Museum of the American Indian


Before America was occupied by the European, it was home to the American Indians.  The American Indian is the native of the United States. The museum has a huge collection of the history of the American Indians. If you want to learn about the American Indians, you can visit the National Museum of the American Indian. Tourists can learn how the American came to occupy the land for more than ten thousands of years.  The full name of the museum is Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). It was originally built in 1989. It also runs and managed three facilities. The three facilities are located in Washington, Maryland and New York City.

The George Gustav Heye Center houses the National Museum of the American Indian. The museum was established to pay respect to the American Indians including literature, art, and skills. The admission to the museum is free of charge. It is a popular attraction place for both local and international visitors.

What’s To Do and See?

Tourists will be amazed at the architecture of the grand building. The style of the museum building reminds one about the Greek Temple. The National Museum of the American Indian has a magnificent architecture. It is located in the Alexandar Hamilton U.S. Custom House. If you are at Battery Park, you can walk to the museum. The museum has a beautiful interior design. The floor and wall are made from white marble. The white marbles are polished and shiny. The ceilings of the museum are painted. The architect of the National Museum of the American Indian is Cass Gilbert. The construction of the National Museum of the American Indian comes to a completion in 1907. The museum covers an area of twenty thousand square feet.

The galleries are arranged within the semi circle of the rotunda. If you visit the National Museum of the American Indian, you will notice that the galleries are arranged in a winding and maze like. The semi circle shape of the rotunda prevents the tourists from getting lost while browsing the gallery.

The NMIA has two stories. Though the building has two stories, it offers a large range of American Indian artifacts. If you want to explore every single artifact in the museum, you must spend at least four hours. Some artifacts have many texts.

The museum offers a lot of artworks contributed by Native American Indians. Some of the artworks are contributed a long time ago. Contemporary American Indian artworks are also available.

The museum features more than 1,000,000 items that focus on the Native American Indian theme. The collection of over 1,000,000 items is contributed by George Gustav Heye. George donated a large collection of American Indian artifacts so that there will be more exhibitions items in the museum. The items donated by George include wood and stone sculpture obtained from the North West Coast. Other things included in the collection are clothes, bonnets, basket, pottery and etc. Navajo weavings are available in the museum. The museum features exhibitions of the different American Indian tribes such as Mayan items and Olmec items. The gold and textile by the Andean people are also on display at the museum. While visiting the museum, you will observe the feathery items.

The items in the museum represent the cultures of the major American Indian tribe. The period of the collections ranges from the Paleo Indian period to the present day.

On top of that, the museum has a collection of over ninety thousands photographs about the Native American.  Besides, the museum has an archive for audio visual media, documents and etc. Every year, the National Museum of the American Indian will hold a festival to publicize the documentary films of the American Indians.

Exhibitions

Apart from the permanent exhibition, the museum offers a large range of temporary exhibition. Off the Map: Landscape in the Native Imagination showcases masterpieces from artists that depict the Native Indian landscape. The masterpieces feature the landscape of the American Indian in several aspects including home, culture and etc. The masterpieces in the Off the Map: Landscape in the Native Imagination exhibitions are contributed by Jeffrey Gibson, Erica Lord, Emmi Whitehorse and Charles Lavadour.

The exhibition titled “Beauty Surrounds Us” offers 77 items taken from the collection of the National Museum of the American Indian. The exhibition was conducted to fulfill the inauguration of the Diker Pavilion for Native Arts and Cultures. Some of the items displayed in the exhibition “Beauty Surrounds Us” are An Eskimo cribbage board, and dancing stockings. There is a trumpet from the pre Colombian period in Mexico in the exhibition as well.

Public Programs

The museum regularly organizes educational programs for adults and children. Native American musicians will perform at the public program. Children can experience hands on activity in the hands on workshop. Family friendly programs are available. The family programs allow parents and their children to explore the exciting history of the Native Americans. Through the public programs, the visitors can learn about the American Indian traditions.

The Store

The museum is equipped with two gift stores. The gift stores are located on two different floors. In the gift store, you will find American Indian souvenirs. Most of the souvenirs are crafts and artwork made by American Indians. The gift store is open from 10 o’ clock in the morning to 5 o’ clock in the afternoon. Visiting the Museum

The admission for the National Museum of the American Indian is free of charge. The opening hour of the museum is from 10 o’ clock in the morning to 5 o’ clock in the afternoon. The museum extends its opening hours to 8 p.m. on Thursday. It is not open on Christmas, which is the 25th of December. The museum can be accessed by the handicapped people. You can access the museum by using bus, subway train, and taxi cab.
