New York Museum of Modern Art


Museum of Modern Art is situated in the middle of Manhattan. Surrounding the Museum of Modern Art are theaters, high rise buildings and dining areas. Museum of Modern Art was established on 1929. The museum was the suggestion of important women such as Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Mary Sullivan, and Lillie P. Bliss. Museum of Modern Art is dubbed as the greatest art museum in the whole world. When the museum first opened, it has eight paintings and one print. Now, it offers more than one hundred and fifty thousand arts. Tourists can browse thousands of movies in the film archives.

History

Museum of Modern Art is the first museum to exhibit modern art. The first director of the museum is Alfred H. Barr Jr. When Alfred held the position, the museum prospers so that its collection increases significantly within 10 years. The museum has relocated three times. It settled in midtown in 1939.

Structure

The official opening day of the new Museum of Modern Art building took place in November 2004. The new building looks much more modern than the previous building. The new building is twice times larger than the previous building. The architect of the museum is Yoshio Taniguci. The museum is equipped with lights. It covers an area of 640,000 square foot. The building includes a ten story atruym. One prominent feature of the Museum of Modern Art is the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller sculpture garden. The new museum is equipped with two theaters and an auditorium that can sit up to 150 audiences. Visitors can find a large collection of books on arts in the research library.

The Collection

The Museum of Modern Art offers a large collection of masterpieces by famous artists that existed throughout the centuries. Some of the famous paintings in the Museum of Modern Art include Starry Night by Van Gogh, Les Demoiselles d’ Avignon by Picasso and etc. Visitors are allowed to take snapshot of the paintings in the museum. In addition to the world famous painters, it also features works of American artists such as Jackson Pollock, and Andy Warhol.

Museum of Modern Art is among the first museum to offers a collection of photography and film. By the late 20th century, the museum has the largest collection of photography in the world. Edward Steichen and John Szarkowski are responsible for the managing photography collection at the Museum of Modern Art. Currently, the film archives offer a collection of twenty two thousand films. Four million still films are included in the film archives as well.

In the design collection, you can find unique furniture created by Eames, Lazslo and Noguchi. The Bell 47D1 helicopter is also featured in the Museum of Modern Art.

Visiting the Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) is open for visitation every day. It is closed on Tuesday and major holiday.  The MOMA museum is open from 10:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. On Thursday, the MOMA museum is open until 8:45 p.m. on June 3. The MOMA museum is also open until 8:35 p.m. on the Thursday in July and August. On Friday, the MOMA museum is open from 10:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m.

It is situated in the middle of the Manhattan town so it can be accessed by public transportation. You can take the local bus and train to travel to the Museum of Modern Art. The nearest subway line to the Museum of Modern Art are W 48 St, W 49 St, W 50 St, W 51 St, W 52 St, W 53 St, and W 54 St. If you are coming from the east region, you should use the bus stations M1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 to 53rd Street. If you are traveling by car, you can take several bridges to reach the Museum of Modern Art. If you are coming from Bronx or Long Island, you should take the Tribogo Bridge. If you are located in Brooklyn and Staten Island, you should take Williamsburg bridge. The nearest airport to the Museum of Modern Art includes Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

It has its own car park. Visitors can get a discount for the car park ticket if they are able to produce the entrance ticket. The opening hours differs from day to day. Its opening hours is extended to midnight at least once per week.

The admission fee for adult is $20. Seniors are charged $16 while students are charged $12. If your children are below 16 years old, they can enter the museum without paying for the ticket.

There are several restaurants at the museum including Café 2, and Terrace 5. Café 2 offers Italian cuisines including pastas, soups and salads. Customers can choose to carry their food from the service counter or have the waitress bring it to their table. Terrace 5 is a beautiful restaurant faced with the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller sculpture garden.

The MOMA gift shop offers a large range of souvenirs and cards. There is a large collection of books in the MOMA gift shop. Nearby the MOMA gift shop is the MOMA design store. The Museum of Modern Art is fully equipped with disabled facilities. Wheelchairs are provided to the disabled visitors on first come first serve basis. There are several wheelchair accessible restrooms located on all the levels in the museum. The museum is equipped with elevators. The FM assistive listening device can be found in the Gallery Talks. The theaters in the Museum of Modern Art are installed with infrared sound enhancement system. Public telephone and TTY telephones are found on the lowest level in the MOMA building. People who suffer from eye impairment can bring guide dog into the museum.

Every Target Free Fridays, the visitors can visit the museum for free of charge. The Target Free Friday hours are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. You can purchase the ticket to the rock observation deck at MoMA admissions desk for $30.00.
