New York Children’s Museum of Manhattan


The Children’s Museum of Manhattan offers a large range of exhibitions. It is designed specifically for children under twelve years old. Children will be able to take advantage of the educational program at the museum. Children learn faster through contact with the artifact in the museum. Every year, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan receives more than 325,000 visitors. Of the 325,000 visitors, 30,000 of them are children who visited in school group. The visitors are from the local neighborhoods and overseas country. There are more than thirty four thousands that participate in the offsite outreach program.

The suggestion of the Children’s Museum of Manhattan put forward by Bette Korman. It was established under the name GAME. GAME stands for Growth Trough Art and Museum Education.  It was built in 1973. During the 1973, the New York City experiences a dire financial situation. Most of the school art and music programmes are eliminated. A group of artists and educators joined their efforts and setup a small storefront in Harlem and Upper West Side.  Later, they receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. They moved into the courthouse. At that time, there are only a small range of exhibitions and studio.

The museum was originally called the Manhattan Laboratory Museum. The Manhattan Laboratory Museum was renamed to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan in 1980. In 1989, it relocated to the West 83rd Street.

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan organized several exhibitions every year. The exhibitions are child friendly. Children will be able to explore the displayed items safely. There are two types of exhibitions in the Children’s Museum of Manhattan including permanent and temporary exhibitions. The temporary exhibitions enhance the visitor’s experience and keep them entertained all the time.

PlayWorks

PlayWorks is a hand on exhibition for children ages between 1 – 4 years old. By exploring things, children will be able to gain experiences and learn quickly. The purpose of the PlayWorks exhibition is to enable children to increase their knowledge so that they will be prepared for the kindergarten. At PlayWorks, you will find many entertaining activities for your kids to perform. Some of the entertaining activities offered at PlayWorks include talking dragon, and connect air tube puzzle. Children have the opportunity to paint on a large wall and drive the fire truck.

Little West Side

Little West Side is an exhibition designed for children under four years old. Children can improve their mathematical and language skills through the hand on exhibition. Children are able to develop color skills through buying goods. They will learn how to tell the time by moving the hands on the clock tower. There are a wide variety of books for children to read.

City Splash

City Splash is an exhibition that is suitable for children under twelve years old. In this exhibition, children can explore the powers of water. The City Splash offers an excellent aquatic experience to children. Children can paint with water. The City Splash exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday afternoon.

Temporary Exhibits

Children’s Museum of Manhattan offers temporary exhibition occasionally. The temporary exhibitions are organized based on the trends and interests of the visitors.

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is a learning institution for children of all ages. It covers an area of 38,000 feet. Its outreach programs are available at the fifty locations in the New York City.

Children’s Museum of Manhattan Tourism

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is available from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. It is closed on Monday. The member hours are from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m on the second Thursday of each month. The Children’s Museum offers free admission on the first Friday. The free admission hour is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The museum is closed on major holidays including Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. This year, the museum is open on holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Columbus Day. The free admission of the Children’s Museum of Manhattan is sponsored by Target.

The general admission fee is $10. Seniors who are aged above 62 years old is charged $7. Children that are aged under 1 year old will be admitted into the museum for free of charge. Members also can access the museum without paying for the ticket fee. To become member of the museum, you must sign up for the membership. You have to pay for a onetime fee which covers the ticket expenses for one year. The museum membership is suitable for people who visit the museum frequently.

Children’s Museum of Manhattan offers two guided tours including School Year Guided Group Tours and Summer Day Camp Guided Group Tours. Both group tours last for one hour and thirty minutes. The School Year Guided Group tour brings the children to an interactive exhibition and hand on workshop. The School Year Guided Group offers a number of programs including Diego’s Rainforest Adventure, Dora’s Neighborhood, Ancient Tales, An Ancient Odyssey, City Sights and Sounds, Building Creativity, Toys Inside Out and All about Water.

The Summer Day Camp Tours is held on the summer of each year. The Summer Day Camp Guided Group Tours allow the children to choose from a variety of programs including It’s All Greek to me, Toys Inside Out, Being Green, and PlayWorks. The tours are organized in compliance of the regulations of the New York State and City Performance Standards.

The museum has a gift store. The gift store sells all kinds of souvenirs based on children theme. The museum store opening hours is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m is from Tuesday to Sunday.

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan can be accessed through subway line by taking the 1 train to the 79th or 86th St. Station. If you want to take the A, B, C, or D train, you stop at the 59th St. Station. After that, you must transfer to the 1 train. You can travel by bus as well. Some of the bus that is going to the museum includes M7, M10 and M11. You can also take the cross town M65 and M86 bus and stop at Broadway.
