New York Central Park


Central Park is an 843 acre park located in the New York City. Every day, the Central Park is visited by the New Yorkers and foreign tourists. You can do a lot of activities at the Central Park. You can take a walk at the Central Park during your free time. It is the number one park that receives the highest number of visitors in the United States. It is estimated that it is visited by more than 25,000,000 people every year.

The suggestion to build the Central Park was put forward in 1850. The project was proposed because the New York City is losing the green space. Most of the area in the New York City is occupied by high rise buildings. The Evening Post editor and orator, William Cullen Bryant is the one that suggested the construction of the Central Park. Eventually, a swampland of about 843 acres was purchased to build the park. The State of the New York City also purchased the immigrant housing for the building of the Central Park.

It is difficult to construct a park in the area. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux oversee the Central Park project. The two overseers are American landscape architect. During the construction, the state purchased 500,000 cubic feet of topsoil. The 500,000 cubic feet of topsoil is located in New Jersey. The place used to be a junk collection field. Once the state bought it over, the workers remove over 10,000,000 junk materials from the area. By removing the junks, the park now has place to plants the flora and fauna. There are about 4,000,000 trees, shrubs and plants in the Central Park. There is more than 1500 species of plants.

The Central Park is operated and managed by the Central Park Conservancy. It is a non for profit organization that is funded privately. The Central Park Conservancy was established on 1980.

Within the Park

The Great Lawn is a large area of green grass. It also has a number of artificial lakes. You can go skating on the ice skating rinks. There are a number of hiking trails. If you like to ride bicycle, you can go cycling in the Central Park. Other features in the zoo include a sanctuary, and children’s playground.

Many New Yorkers came to the park to jog every day. Several cultural events take place in the park every year. Some of the cultural events that are held in the park include Public Theatre Company’s summer theatre productions. Most of the events have Shakespeare theme. Every summer, the Philharmonic Orchestra performs at the Lincoln Center. The Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by other productions from the Metropolitan Opera Company. There are also other programmes that are hled at the Great Lawn each year.

The Central Park has fifty two fountains. It also has monuments and sculptures. The most famous sculpture in the Central Park is the Cleopatra’s Needle. The Cleopatra’s Needle is sculpture that is given as present by Egypt. The Alice in Wonderland sculpture is one of the most famous sculptures in the Central Park. The Alice in Wonderland sculpture is situated above large mushrooms. Alice in Wonderland is located at East 75th Street north to Conservatory Water. Balto is located at the East 67th Street near the East Drive. Mother Goose is located at the East 71st Street at Rumsey Playfield. The statute of Duke Ellington can also be found in the Central Park.

The carousel in Central Park is located at mid-Park at 64th Street. During April – October, the carousel is open from 10:00 am-6:00 pm on weekdays and 10:00 am-7:00 pm on weekends. During November-December, the carousel is open daily from 10:00 am to dusk. During January-March, the carouse is open from 10:00 am to dusk on weekends.

There are 36 bridges and arches in the Central Park. The Central Park has more than 125 drinking fountains.  It has 7 ornamental fountains including Angel f the Waters at Bethesda Terrace, Cherry Hill, Sophie Loeb Fountain and Pulitzer Fountain at Grand Army Plaza.

Visiting the Park

Central Park can be accessed through the highway. There are many Manhattan bus that go to the Central Park. You can also go to the Central Park by taking subway train. If you are located at Midtown, you can walk to the Central Park since it is located only a small distance away. The Central Park welcomes all kinds of visitors including local residents, local tourist and international tourists.

From Monday to Friday, the Central Park is closed to motor traffic from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm – 7:00 am. During the weekends, the Central Park is closed to motor traffic from 7:00 pm. On Friday, the Central Park is closed to motor traffic from 7:00 am. During holidays, it is closed on 7:00 pm the night before – 7:00 am the day after.

Bird watchers can bring their binoculars to watch the birds in the park. The Central Park offers art and architectural tours. Other activities in the park include storytelling and theatre. The Central Park has a circumference of six miles. It has 36 bridges and 21 playgrounds. There are more than two hundred and seventy five birds in the Central Park. Benches are located throughout the Central Park. The Central Park is home to twenty five thousand trees.

The Central Park is equipped with restrooms. If you are hungry, you can dine in at the nearby restaurants. The famous Tavern on the Green restaurant is located at the Central Park. There are four visitors’ centers. The visitors centers offers information about the direction and schedules of events at the Central park. Visitors can also request for maps at the visitors center.

The flowers in the Central Park bloom during the spring and summer. During the winter, you will be impressed by the snowy landscape.
